Even after the holidays, there are always opportunities to nurture empathy and kindness in children. As Ephesians 4:32 encourages, we must be kind and compassionate to one another. Here are some ways to help kids be caring and thoughtful year-round:
- Reading with Empathy: When reading books together, pause to ask how characters might feel and how we can show them love. Discuss how Jesus wants us to love everyone.
- Active Listening: Practice active listening skills by looking people in the eye, nodding, and reflecting on what they shared. Remember Jesus’ compassion as a model.
- Cheering Up Others: Brainstorm ways to cheer up someone who is sick or sad. Make cards, draw pictures, or deliver a care package. Think of how Jesus lifted those who were suffering.
- Learning about Others: Set a goal to learn something new about someone you don’t know well, like a classmate. Recognize that God made each person unique and special.
- Conflict Resolution: Role-play scenarios where forgiveness and grace are needed. Talk through how to handle conflict Biblically, as Jesus taught us.
- Family Volunteering: Volunteer as a family on weekends. Look for opportunities that allow your kids to see how their actions can uplift others in need.
No matter the season, embedding lessons of empathy and compassion into our children’s daily lives is critical. By guiding them to think of others and spreading kindness, we help sculpt young hearts for God.
